Grey water and wastewater management systems

Reusing grey water

If you reuse grey water from a washing machine, bath, or other domestic source (excluding the toilet) to irrigate your garden, it is important to do so safely.

Diversion

Grey water is diverted directly to the lawn or garden, and must not flow onto neighbouring properties, or cause a nuisance to other residents.

Storage

You need a permit from our Health Services Unit when grey water is stored for 24 hours or more for future reuse.

On-site wastewater management systems

We have a small number of properties not connected to Yarra Valley Water’s reticulated sewerage system.

Our Health Services Unit ensures that on-site wastewater management systems installed on these properties are maintained.

Installation permit

You need a permit before you install or alter a wastewater management system on your property.
