The theme this year is: 'The Heidelberg School' art movement
For the 2025 Banyule Art Salon, we invite artists in our community to create their own masterpieces that respond to or are inspired by the Heidelberg School.
The Heidelberg School was the first significant colonial art movement in Australia.
The name was first coined in 1891 by art critic Sidney Dickinson to describe the group of Australian Impressionist artists who painted en plein air (outside) in the rural outskirts of Sydney and Melbourne, and had established an outdoor painting camp in the Heidelberg and Eaglemont area.
In 2025, we are proud to host a selection of paintings by the Heidelberg School of artists, on long-term loan from the National Gallery of Australia, with support from the Australian Government, as part of the Sharing the National Collection initiative.
This is your opportunity to have your artworks displayed alongside some of the most iconic and famous paintings in Australia.
In the lead up to this highly-anticipated loan and exhibition, we invite our community to create their own Heidelberg School-inspired art.
Artworks that do not respond to the theme will not be accepted.
