Northern Innovation and Sustainability Hub

Employment opportunities for La Trobe and Heidelberg

What we are seeking

We are seeking $1M in government funding to develop a precinct structure plan for the Northern Innovation and Sustainability Precinct (NISP) that will facilitate future development, innovation and investment.

We are also advocating for $4M in government funding for the catalytic projects identified in the NISP opportunities statement 2024.

Video

This video brings to life the shared vision for the precinct. See how innovation and sustainability are driving the future of Melbourne’s north. Thank you to all collaborators who helped bring this project to life, from local leaders and businesses to the brilliant Year 12 School Captains from Reservoir High.

What it will deliver

The NISP will deliver opportunities in education, health and research innovation.

Investment already underway:

  • La Trobe University’s $5 Billion City of the Future with 12,000 new residents and 20,000 jobs.
  • $150 million La Trobe University Sports Park.
  • Australian Food Innovation Centre at La Trobe.
  • $200 million expansion of the La Trobe Hospital by Healthscope.
  • New BioNTech facility to deliver ground breaking mRNA research.
  • Victorian Centre for AI in Medical Innovation.
  • $1.3 billion redevelopment of Northland with 2300 new residential apartments.
  • $180 million expansion of Warringal Private Hospital.
  • $300 million upgrade of Austin Hospital.

What you can do

To help us deliver this priority, you can write to our Lower House Member of Parliament for this electorate or any of our Upper House Members of Parliament for their commitment to deliver funding for this project.

Overview

The NISP is one of only a few nationally significant employment precincts in Melbourne, attracting workers, students, and visitors from across Australia and overseas. It supports almost 40,000 jobs and generates $9.5 billion in economic output per annum, accounting for 1.5% of all jobs and 1.2% of Greater Melbourne’s economic output.

The precinct is home to world leading private enterprise and government facilities including:

  • La Trobe University
  • Austin Hospital
  • Warringal Private Hospital
  • Heidelberg West Business Park
  • Northland Shopping Centre
  • Olivia Newton John Cancer Centre
  • Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital
  • Mercy Health for Women.

The precinct has experienced remarkable growth over the last five years, achieving 12% growth in jobs and contributing 10.2% of economic growth.

The NISP (also known as the La Trobe National Employment and Innovation Cluster or NEIC) was identified by the Victorian Government as critical for driving future regional productivity, innovation and employment growth in Melbourne’s north.

Billions of dollars of significant investment is already underway in the precinct and the need to masterplan the precinct will enable a planned approach to the development taking place and enable the precinct to reach its full potential.

Why now?
Population is projected to increase 22% by 2041, reaching 773,000 people within a 20 minute catchment. Now is the time to plan for the housing, transport, and job opportunities to support this growth.
