Skip bin permit

You must apply for a permit if a hired skip bin or container will be placed where closing or restricting public access (or anywhere on public land) is required.

This includes:

  • a street or road managed by Banyule or VicRoads
  • any footpath, nature strip or public laneway.

No permit is required for bin placement on private driveways or private land.

Steps to apply

Step 1.Location

Understanding who manages your proposed placement location is important to know.

We manage most of the local streets in Banyule, but not all. Some are managed by the VicRoads.

If you are unsure about your location, contact a construction management officer on 9490 4222 or consult VicRoads on 13 11 71.

Step 2.VicRoads MOA

If VicRoads manages your proposed location, then you must first apply for a memorandum of authority.

This is not required if we manage the location.

Step 3.Courtesy letter

Since you need to close or restrict public access, all residences and businesses within 150m of your proposed location must be notified.

The letter should be short and clear, and include details on:

  • when the bin will be placed and collected
  • dimensions of the bin
  • where it will be placed.

Notification must be at least 7 days before bin placement. You must distribute the letter yourself.

A draft letter is required in your application.

Step 5.Outcome

We will respond tor application within 5 working days. We will discuss your draft letter, and any next steps.
