Persistence has paid off for our advocacy work, with yesterday’s Victorian Budget including $2.78 million for a pedestrian crossing on Diamond Creek Road in Greensborough.
Working with community members and local MPs, we advocated strongly for a crossing after two car accidents involving local students last year.
Cr Elizabeth Nealy said the crossing would improve safety on the busy arterial road and commended community members who collected a petition that was presented to Eltham MP Vicki Ward, Bundoora MP Colin Brooks and Minister for Roads and Roads Safety Melissa Horne.
“This is a great outcome and Council thanks the Victorian Government for listening to us and our community,” Cr Nealy said. “This shows that when we all work together we can achieve great outcomes for our community.”
Joining Cr Nealy and MPs at the funding announcement yesterday were 2 people with a special interest in the new crossing: Eliza, who was seriously injured when hit by a car while crossing the road after school, and her mum Louise.
Also there for the good news were Montmorency Secondary College principal Frances Ibbott and Greensborough resident Joanne, who started the petition.
The pedestrian crossing with signals will be installed on Diamond Creek Road between Civic Drive and St Helena Road. The exact location of the crossing is to be determined and we will continue to advocate on what it believes to be the best site.
