We adopted the Ivanhoe Sports Precinct Plan on 18 July 2022. Sport field lighting was identified as a top priority to be improve Chelsworth Park, leased by Chelsworth Park Tennis Club.

Aerial view of the Chelsworth Park tennis courts to display where new lighting will be installed.

The orange courts 3 and 4 at centre will be receiving the new LED lights. The other two orange courts have existing lighting.

As part of our commitment to sport and recreation locally, we are investing in a lighting upgrade to the club, including:

  • 4 courts to synthetic clay and reconstruction of the retaining wall
  • addition of LED lighting on courts 3 and 4 identical to current lights on courts 1 and 2
  • new black fencing, replacing old fencing.

The club is growing within Ivanhoe and currently facilities over 90 members, with family memberships being the biggest user group. The new lighting will assist the club in continuing to grow and deliver training and games in the evenings. With growing participation, we want to make sure clubs can make the most out of their facilities now, and into the future.

Upgrade impact

This project will take up to 2-3 months to complete, dependant on the weather, and the courts will not be accessible during this time.

Construction will take place from January through March 2023.

Benefits

  • Energy efficiency: conventional lighting consumes much more energy compared to LED lighting, which relates up to 60% saving on energy bills.
  • Long lasting asset for us and our community with minimal maintenance
  • Immediate brightness: instant brightness when you turn on as LED has no warm-up time so full lights come on straight away.
  • Spill control: traditional lighting shows an array of uneven lighting while LED lighting showcases a fine bright white light on the entire field that can also be positioned differently, resulting in minimum spillage into the nearby environment and wildlife.

Operation

We lease Chelsworth Park to Chelsworth Park Tennis Club. The new lights will be used up to 4 evenings a week to assist in night games, training and to enable more people to play after work and school during the week.
