Changes to dog waste bins in parks
Published on 14 February 2025
Did you know? Your dog waste can now go in any general rubbish bin (red lid) in Banyule’s parks and reserves.
As a result, we are phasing out the green dog waste bins in parks and adding new, larger 240-litre general waste bins in parks where they are needed.
This will mean a more operationally efficient and cost-effective waste service.
Because of the switch to general waste bins, we can now transition to a mechanical waste pick-up service for all park bins. This reduces manual handling and makes the job safer for our staff.
We will still provide dog waste bags in high-use locations. The bags will be attached to general waste bins and refilled on a regular basis.
This change follows a review of waste services in our parks and reserves that included community consultation (Towards Zero Waste Management Plan 2024-2028). When asked about bins in parks, more community members told us they wanted standard rubbish bins for dog poo disposal (49%) than a mix of dedicated dog waste bins and general waste bins (39%).
