Trees and a grassy bushland

The Yallambie Riparian Woodlands have long been a cherished biodiversity site and are a great example of how a low value patch of mown grass can instead support an abundance of indigenous wildlife.

This past October, the Yarra 1 team joined up with members of the Bush Crew to perform a timely Spring Ecological Burn at Yallambie. Burning is an essential management technique for promoting indigenous plant diversity. In this case we were burning to reduce the seed drop of grassy weeds, specifically targeting Vulpia bromoides grass.

A great alternative to herbicide use, this ecological burn will promote new growth for indigenous grasses, while also removing thick layers of thatch to make space for natural germination. The process also releases essential nutrients back into the soil, enriching the fertility of the site.
