Bush Crew diaries February 2025
Published on 28 January 2025
With the hot weather setting in and the weeds dying down, the Bush Crew has been able to its their focus to one of its favorite activities: building and installing nesting boxes.
Many of our local birds, mammals and reptiles rely on hollows for shelter from weather and protection from predators, as well as for roosting and breeding. Sadly, many of the trees big and old enough to have formed these hollows in Banyule were lost shortly after European settlement.
To make up for this accommodation shortage, the crew has installed several different styles of nesting boxes in our bushland reserves and green corridors. Specific types of boxes have been installed for Kreft’s gliders, possums, ducks, microbats, owls, parrots and kookaburras.
Keep an eye out for these nesting boxes next time you are visiting one of our bushland reserves. Better yet, head down to Nangak Tamboree Wildlife Sanctuary at Latrobe University and purchase a nesting box for your place.
