Join us to celebrate Harmony Week, a celebration that recognises our diversity and brings people from different backgrounds together.

Browse our vibrant market with diverse artists and makers and connect with local organisations and groups from our community. You can also enjoy live music and performances showcasing our multicultural community. There will be fun activities for the whole family and an opportunity to learn and celebrate our diverse and wonderful community.

This is not a pet friendly event please leave your animals at home.

We acknowledge Harmony Week falls within Ramadan this year. We are holding this event in April to provide greater opportunity for our Muslim community to also attend.

What to expect

The Knowing Project is an immersive drumming workshop and performance led by facilitator Lamine Sonko, and includes traditional rhythm and song from Senegal. The group explores the transformative power of cultural traditions where the universal language of music bridges divides and fosters a sense of interconnectedness and understanding of the cultural tapestry that unites us all.

Hong De Lion & Dragon Dance Association bring us Fut San / Fo Shan / Faat San, the Chinese southern style lion dance originated from Fo Shan, a region in Guangzhou. This style of lion dance is mainly adopted by Chinese Kung Fu school, like Hung Gar, Hung Fut, Choy Li Fut, Lung Ying, Bak Hok, Tam Gar and Mok Gar. One of the most famous lion dancer ever known is Master Huang Fei Hung. This Fo Shan style is a very strong and aggressive in style.

Wherever the artist Vivian Qiu travels – sitting on the train, watching over a lake – she braids in the sound, smell and the essence of that place. In this way the Life Line cord captures life’s moments, stories and body sensation. Join her and learn the technique of Japanese Kumihimo braiding. It’s a traditional Japanese art form of braiding threads into cords for garments or festival decoration. Through Vivian’s meditative approach, whatever your body is feeling is recorded directly into this ‘Life Line’ cord. This braiding is something you can do for some quiet time, while having a conversation with yourself, or something you can do with your hands while chatting away with friends.

For many years now, Taste of India Incorporated has served as a not for profit organisation, bringing together our immigrant population through arts, music and dance. A collective initiative and passionate vision of a few, saw the inception of Taste of India in 2000 which has since been a colossal success showcasing artistic and aesthetic qualities of Indian culture. As we continue to move forward, Taste of India remains committed to enriching our local community by actively participating in council programs and other local events. Our engagement not only highlights the vibrant diversity of cultures but also strengthens our bonds within the community we proudly serve.

The market and activities program will include:

  • henna artistry
  • CALD kindergarten activity
  • Japanese Kumihimo braiding workshop
  • Islamic museum mosque building workshop.

The stage and entertainment program will include:

  • Story time in Chinese Mandarin with Yumei Yanges
  • The Knowing Project and African drumming workshop
  • Uncle Charles Pakana Acknowledgement of Country speech
  • Didgeridoo demonstration
  • Chinese lion dance demonstration by Hong De Lion and Dragon Dance Association
  • Indian music and dance demonstration by Taste of India
  • Trying out Indian music instruments.

There are no allocated or reserved seating: you are encouraged to arrive early to secure an ideal spot (accessible positions are available).

A selection of cultural food and drinks will be available for purchase at the event. There are also many traders along Upper Heidelberg Road offering an array of food and drink options which you can grab and bring back for the show.

Be environmentally friendly: bring your own drink bottle and/or re-usable coffee cups and dispose of rubbish responsibly.

Getting to the event

Parking is available at ILCH. Venue is a 5-minute walk from Ivanhoe Train Station. The 510 and 548 bus routes stop at the venue. There are ample bike racks for you to safely store your bike at the entrance of the building.

Location

On-sight parking is available for up to 3 hours on weekdays. There are 2 accessible car spaces located near the theatre entrance as well as an additional 2 spaces and drop off zone at the front of the building which is accessed via Upper Heidelberg Road.

Parking is expected to be busy onsite for the event. We advise that you arrive early if you require close by parking to avoid

Accessibility

Ivanhoe Library and Cultural Hub has accessible parking, a drop-off zone at the front of the building, wheelchair access (everywhere except for the mezzanine), hearing loop system (only can be used with our internal PA systems), accessibility lifts, changing places and accessible hoist-equipped toilets.
