Partingtons Flat

Partingtons Flat landscape

This large reserve has a sporting oval, recreational facilities and areas of remnant indigenous vegetation. Its ridge line offers views of Greensborough.

Flora and fauna

The escarpment overlooking Partingtons Flat, although heavily invaded by exotic shrubs, has many remnants of its pre-European vegetation, including orchids and ferns. Its 2 vegetation communities, grassy dry forest/box-stringybark woodland and herb-rich foothill forest are endangered and threatened. It is managed by Banyule’s Bushland Management Unit.

The reserve is part of a wildlife corridor that follows the Plenty River, and connects Plenty Gorge with the Yarra River. It gives wildlife such as the swamp wallaby food and shelter.

History

Charles Partington owned the land from the 1870s, and leased it to his brother-in-law Robert Whatmough, whose orchard received prizes for its produce. Many fruit trees remain, estimated to be 100-150 years old. The reserve was created in the 1950s when Heidelberg Council purchased 12 acres of land from the Partington family. It is home to the Diamond Valley United Soccer Club.
