Opening night and award ceremony
The 2023 Banyule Award for Works on Paper Finalists’ Exhibition opened on Friday 15 September, with a bumper crowd of excited artists, their friends and our arts community coming together to celebrate this highly anticipated biennial event. The Finalists’ Exhibition showcases 25 artworks, responding to the theme Nhalinggu Bagung.
This year, the prize was judged by Kimberley Moulton (Senior Curator of South-Eastern Aboriginal Collections at Museums Victoria), and Phuong Ngo (artist, curator, and previous winner of the Banyule Award for Works on Paper).
Our prestigious $10,000 national acquisitive art prize was awarded to Aunty Rochelle Patten and Katie Howard for their collaborative artwork, Bayadherra.
The winning artwork, with winners.
Kimberley Moulton said, “This work meets the criteria set for the Award in relation to coming together both in the literal sense of the collaborative work, but also speaks to a broader conversation around solidarity, and the very pertinent issue of protecting the country and threatened species … Aunty Rochelle Patten is also a Senior Elder and knowledge holder, and her cultural artistic practice is significant to the state of Victoria and in highlighting Country and animals. The work is cohesive, with the two artists’ styles coming together seamlessly and in dialogue with each other. This is a visually stunning work and has great conceptual depth and a warm collaborative approach.”
The $1000 Commendation Prize was awarded to Torres Strait Islander artist, Brian Robinson, for his artwork, Legacy: One Umbrella, Eight hundred and eighty thousand voices, sixty thousand years of occupancy.
The exhibition is on until 26 November – make sure to come and see this amazing exhibition of artworks by artists from all around Australia, exploring the theme of Reconciliation and to imagine a future together.
