Safe asbestos handling

Asbestos is a silicate mineral made up of tiny fibres. When it is disturbed, it produces a dust that contains asbestos fibres. Those fibres, if breathed into the lungs, can cause a range of health problems including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Asbestos in the home

Asbestos may be present in homes. Common products containing asbestos include fibro cement, or 'AC' sheeting, and heater insulation. Asbestos in home building materials does not generally pose a health risk unless the material is broken, deteriorating or disturbed to produce dust containing asbestos fibres. Removal and disposal

You must use a licenced contractor to remove asbestos. They will ensure asbestos is removed and disposed of safely.

Asbestos in the workplace

Asbestos in the workplace is regulated by WorkSafe Victoria. Strict handling requirements apply and only approved registered removalists have the expertise and equipment to remove asbestos from the workplace.
