Registering changes

All dogs and cats over 3 months old must be registered or renewed. Submit desexing notifications and tell us when you and your pet(s) have changed address.

Buying, selling or giving away pets

Anyone who wants to sell or give away a dog or cat will need to be on the Pet Exchange Register and have a source number.

The register was introduced 1 July 2019 to help regulate and monitor anyone acting unlawfully when selling dogs and cats.

Buying or adopting a pet

Before you bring a new pet home, look up the source number to check the validity of the breeder or individual.

Is a source number needed no matter what?

Yes. There are only a few occasions when a source number isn't need: visit the Victorian Government site Agriculture: Pet Exchange Register.
