Our role managing emergencies

To make sure Banyule is ready for an emergency, we prepare plans that describe what happens before, during and after emergencies.

We also:

  • inspect private property to prevent fires
  • reduce fuel in council reserves
  • run community education programs so you are ready.

During an emergency

Depending on the nature of the emergency we may:

  • assist with response and recovery by clearing roads, picking up animals, removing fallen trees
  • open a relief centre in a council building or public hall, and offer services such as shelter, water and food
  • assist with the basic material needs, accommodation, support services and access to grants and financial aid.

After an emergency: recovery

Depending on the nature of the emergency we may:

  • clean-up and work to reinstate council assets and infrastructure;
  • form community recovery committees and the Municipal Recovery Planning Group;
  • provide advice and refer affected residents to community service organisations; and
  • provide ongoing recovery activities with other government agencies.

To do all of this we work closely with emergency response agencies, including the:

  • Victoria State Emergency Service
  • Victoria Police
  • Metropolitan Fire Brigade
  • Country Fire Authority
  • Department of Health and Human Services
  • Red Cross
  • Victoria Council of Churches Emergency Ministries.

Municipal Emergency Management Plan (MEMPlan)

The Banyule MEMPlan outlines how we will mitigate, respond to and recover from emergencies, including fire, flood, heatwave and pandemic. It includes a description of the area, identified risks, and plans for managing those risks. The plan was developed in consultation with Victorian emergency response agencies.
