Warringal Cemetery
Warringal Cemetery is on a hill overlooking the Dandenong ranges. It is the main cemetery in the area, offering limited burials and many cremated remains positions available for sale.
It is primarily an old monumental cemetery with a small lawn grave section along the Powlett Street boundary. The lawn grave sections are called Powlett and The Cedars (after the cedar trees that grow in this area). The monumental sections include Roman Catholic, Wesleyan, Presbyterian and Church of England together with a more recently developed area called Pergola Walk.
History
Warringal Cemetery was established in 1855. It was managed by the Warringal Cemetery Trust until 1980, when control was transferred to the City of Heidelberg.
The Cemetery was closed in 1982 for the sale of burial plots, which meant that burials only took place in plots that had already been purchased. In August 1993 it was was reopened for the sale of new burial plots and ashes memorials.
In December 1996, the Trust resolved to extend the Warringal Cemetery into part of the adjacent Powlett Street road reserve. The plan was to extend the cemetery to raise extra revenue that would be used to improved amenity and maintenance for the future, without encroaching upon the road reserve more than necessary.
