We offer volunteering roles that suit a variety of interests and time commitments.

Volunteers play an important role in many of our programs, adding to the greater good of our community, health and economy.

What we offer

We help you to help our community by:

  • assigning a dedicated officer to look after your volunteering requirements
  • ensuring you have the materials and equipment needed
  • ensuring your relationships with staff are respectful and with open communication
  • providing you regular and constructive feedback
  • providing you space to express ideas, suggest improvements and discuss concerns
  • formally recognising your contribution as a volunteer
  • ensuring you are covered by insurance
  • trusting you with confidential information, where necessary, to perform your role
  • respecting your right to say no.

Responsibilities

We will expect you to:

  • represent us in a positive way
  • adhere to our privacy policy
  • be reliable and and on time for shifts, or to provide advance notice when unable to attend
  • sign in and record start and finish times
  • carry out your duties detailed in your position description
  • understand your limitations and ask us for support when needed
  • provide us with feedback, suggestions and recommendations regarding your role
  • be respectful and support other co-workers
  • be willing to accept supervision and training in order to effectively perform your role
  • be accountable and accept evaluation.

Conduct

Volunteers must work by the same code of conduct we ask our staff to follow.

You will receive a copy when you begin your role. As a volunteer, this means:

  • using our resources appropriately
  • disclosing any conflicts of interest
  • maintaining confidentiality and privacy
  • reporting unethical behaviour to your supervisor
  • being respectful and treating people fairly
  • adhering to child safe standards
  • performing your role as part of a team
  • ensuring that you and colleagues are working safely.

Health

To ensure a healthy work space, volunteers must agree to our on-site pandemic practices where applicable.

This may include:

  • signing in using QR codes
  • wearing a mask indoors
  • provide evidence of your vaccination status or exemption
  • using good hand hygiene
  • social-distancing where possible.

If you feel unwell, stay home. Let your supervisor know so alternative arrangements can be made.

Roles

Some programs may remain on hold until early 2022 due to pandemic restrictions.

Age friendly champions

Passionate about making our community as age-friendly a place as we can?

You will work on different projects, depending on your interest area, with staff to create inclusive services that are accessible for everyone. Bring your ideas and creativity. Together, we can help older residents feel part of our community.

Requirements

To volunteer, you will need:

  • desire to make a difference
  • desire to enhance the wellbeing and quality of life for older residents
  • good communication skills
  • to work with a diverse range of people
  • to work in a team and take direction
  • consent to a national police check
  • have a valid Working with Children Check

Time commitment

Variable depending on project and season.

Volunteer as an age friendly champion

Art gallery

As an art gallery volunteer – affectionately known as a gallery sitter – you will welcome visitors into the gallery and help them enjoy the exhibition.

All training and information will be provided. You do not need to have any gallery experience. If you are reliable and passionate about art, we would like to hear from you.

Requirements

To volunteer, you will need to:

  • be friendly, reliable and on time
  • work unsupervised
  • have an interest in art.

Time commitment

We have the options for 1 shift (3-4 hours) a week, or 1 shift a fortnight during exhibition periods.

Volunteer at the art gallery

Bushland worker bee

Enjoy working nature and creating a beautiful natural habitat for our community and wildlife to enjoy?

Join our Bushland Team in regular working bees at the various reserves across Banyule. You will help with revegetation, weeding and bird surveying.

Requirements

To volunteer, you will need to:

  • be physically fit
  • work individually as well as in a team
  • follow on-site safe work practices
  • communicate with a diverse range of individuals.

Time commitment

We hold monthly 2-hour working bees conducted on weekends and across many of our reserves.

Volunteer as a worker bee

Friends of groups

Have a chat to us first before joining one of the many local friends of nature groups.

Gardens 4 Wildlife guide

We encourage residents to set aside an area in their garden for local wildlife. As a guide, you will be part of a team to visit and advise residents on potential changes needed to make their gardens wildlife friendly.

Join us to help make a positive impact on our local environment.

Requirements

To volunteer, you will need to:

  • have good interpersonal skills
  • have knowledge and interest of local flora and fauna
  • work unsupervised in teams
  • get a satisfactory National Criminal History Check and a Working with Children’s Check
  • have access to a computer and email account
  • independently commute to varied locations throughout Banyule.

Time commitment

On site and virtual visits are one hour maximum, not including travel time to and from locations. Report writing will vary, but guides are given 2 weeks to compile their feedback.

Volunteer to be a guide

Jets youth program

Wonder what happens behind the scenes at a music event and how it all comes together?

Join the Jets Events & Production Crew and learn what it takes to produce creative productions. You will be involved with video production, graphic design, music management and much more.

Requirements

To volunteer, you will need to:

  • be passionate about events, music and creativity
  • be between age 14-25
  • work as part of a team

Time commitment

We require a minimum of 3 hours per week at variable times.

Volunteer for the youth program

Advisory committee member

We have 8 community advisory committees. Each are made up of volunteers and organisation representatives in 2-year terms.

Volunteer members are experts in their field or are community members with lived experiences.

Recruitment is announced in our publications, social media and circulated through the committees' networks.

Requirements

To volunteer, you will need to:

  • live, work or study, or have a relevant connection to Banyule
  • have an understanding of the needs and issues related to the committee in which you are interested in
  • have involvement in projects that focus on social and economic issues, inclusion, human rights and change-based advocacy
  • have connections to local community populations and/or relevant organisations in Banyule.

Time commitment

Committees meet multiple times a year, so you must be flexible depending on their schedules.
