What we are seeking
We are advocating for a partnership with the Federal and Victorian Governments to add needed amenities and aquatic spaces to the Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre.
This includes an:
- $11 million investment from the Victorian Government
- $11 million investment from the Federal Government
- $11 million investment from Banyule Council.
What it will deliver
An upgraded Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre will:
- deliver enhanced aquatic facilities that respond to diverse and evolving needs of the community for the next 30-50 years
- ensure a 5 star green accredited facility assisting council to meet its commitment to net zero
- cater for growing community participation in aquatic programming, through increased learn to swim, water safety and recreational swimming.
The updated facility is expected to cater for an extra 60,000 visitors each year.
The net present value of total benefits generated by the investment is estimated at $19 million over 10 years. The facility would generate 95 full-time jobs during construction and 6.1 full-time equivalent new jobs.
What you can do
To help us deliver this priority, you can write to our Lower House Member of Parliament for this electorate or any of our Upper House Members of Parliament for their commitment to deliver funding for this project.
Overview
The Ivanhoe aquatic Centre is a key recreational facility for the community, but it is ageing and no longer meets community needs.
There is competition between learn to swim classes, lap swimmers and aquatic classes:
- The Learn to Swim Program is at capacity, and many families are missing out.
- Emergency Management Victoria estimates that children missed almost 6 million swimming lessons during COVID, resulting in an increased uptake of program now.
- Lap swimmers are highly dissatisfied in the lack of available lanes.
The redevelopment will include:
- upgrading and fixing the 25-metre pool
- additional pool program for learn to swim and aquatic classes
- additional pool for warm water therapy and rehabilitation purposes
- interactive leisure/water play area
- spa and sauna upgrades and relocation
- new and upgraded changerooms that are accessible for people with a disability
- pools that are accessible for people with a disability.
The project will also deliver on our commitment to organisational carbon neutrality by 2028 through an all-electric, 5 Green Star accredited facility outcome.
