Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre electrification

What we are seeking

We are asking for an investment of $4.8 million to help convert Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre from gas-powered to renewable energy.

What it will deliver

We plan to become a carbon neutral organisation by 2028. To achieve this, all gas-consuming equipment must be replaced by electrical equipment. Upgrading the Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre is a cornerstone in this commitment.

What you can do

To help us deliver this priority, you can write to our Lower House Member of Parliament for this electorate or any of our Upper House Members of Parliament for their commitment to deliver funding for this project.

Overview

The centre is destined to become one of the fist aquatic facilities in Melbourne to be retrofitted to achieve net zero-emissions and run on 100% renewable energy through an all-electric, 5 Green Star accredited facility.

Currently, the centre relies on 2 gas boilers that consume about 8,000,000 MJ/yr and cost more than $100,000 to operate.

The yearly carbon emissions are the same as 195 semi-trailers making round trips from Melbourne to Sydney.

Our electricity comes from renewable sources through the Victorian Energy Collaboration (VECO) program. As a result, electrifying the centre will remove all emissions from on-site operations, and the replacement electric heat pumps will be 3-5 times more energy efficiency than the boilers.

Why now?
Ivanhoe Aquatic Centre will soon undergo major upgrades to its pool facilities. This is an ideal time to install green initiatives in line with our commitment to having net zero greenhouse gas emissions.
