What we are seeking
We would like the Federal Government to achieve a greener transport sector by
- Investing in research and development projects to pilot zero-emission alternatives for our heavy vehicle fleet and to support the introduction of new technologies in Australia.
- Partnering with us to financially support our fleet conversion (for example, power upgrades, charging station installations).
- Partnering with local government to find solutions for different fleet and plant, and to financially support the pilot of new zero-emission heavy machinery such as waste collection trucks and street sweepers.
What it will deliver
To meet our zero-emissions fleet target by 2028, it is critical for the government to investigate the development or securing national availability of emerging technologies in high-energy use trucks and plant.
A zero-emission fleet will reduce 50% of our carbon emissions.
What you can do
To help us deliver this priority, you can write to our Lower House Member of Parliament for this electorate or any of our Upper House Members of Parliament for their commitment to deliver funding for this project.
Overview
Our fleet has 262 trucks and vehicles, including buses, mowers, tractors and backhoes. The fleet contributes 47% of carbon emissions created from all our activities, and is responsible for producing 2200 tonnes of emissions: equivalent to the average energy consumption of 188 Australian homes.
For many years, manufacturers have been developing engine technologies that will reduce emissions from vehicles (for example, diesel, LPG, biofuels). However, each of these technologies still generates carbon emissions, and and not suitable options for a zero-emissions fleet.
Currently, the only technology options available for zero-emissions are electric vehicle variants. These are not suitable for waste collection trucks and street sweepers. An alternative technology solution is required that will allow for zero-emissions and easy, fast refuelling when required.
