Banyule City Council residents are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity to rid their homes of unwanted household chemicals for free.
On Saturday 5 May, residents can take their household chemicals for safe disposal to the Transfer Station, 307 - 325 Waterdale Rd, Bellfield (Melway 31 F4) between 8.00am and 4.00pm.
Organised by the Banyule City Council in partnership with Sustainability Victoria, the Detox Your Home program helps residents dispose of their old and unwanted chemicals in an environmentally responsible way.
Among the types of unwanted household chemicals accepted for disposal are:
Items that cannot be accepted include:
> chemicals used by businesses commercial and industrial purposes.
> containers over 20 litres or 20 kilograms or empty chemical containers.
> farm chemicals.
> waste asbestos, ammunition and flares.
Banyule City Council Mayor said household chemicals can be dangerous if they are not stored or disposed of safely.
"Storing old chemicals in the shed or under the sink increases the risk of poisoning around the home."
"Sending chemicals to landfill or even pouring small amounts down storm water drains can pollute creeks and rivers, harming plants and animals," he said.

Council has developed a state of the art Material Recovery Facility (MRF) and Education Centre (Rethink Centre) which complement the existing Waste Recovery Centre. These facilities provide a sustainable, commercially viable and efficient long term recycling and education program for the City, surrounding municipalities and other private sector providers.
The MRF (operated by Visy Recycling) separates recyclabes that are collected from the kerbside by Banyule and other councils, such as paper, steel, plastic and glass. The separated materials are baled and then transported for further processing.
The rethink Education Centre and outreach programs focus on promoting the environmental benefits of waste minimisation, with a view to encouraging the community to adopt waste wise attitudes and actions. The programs link with and embellish other environmental programs.
The full suite of services provided has resulted in a diversion of 54% of waste from landfill during 2004/05.
For the year 2005/06 the average cost of collection and processing recyclabes (bottles, cans and paper, etc) was $30.79 per household.
Domestic Waste Collection
To protect the health and safety of staff who collect your garbage, please make sure your rubbish bins do not contain unwrapped broken glass, ashes, bricks, concrete or dust.
Recycle and green waste bins will be collected on alternate weeks therefore only two bins are put out each week. Click on the link above to find out the exact dates for recycling and green waste collections.
Please note: Any garbage, recycling or green waste collections on or immediately after Anzac Day, Good Friday and Christmas Day will be picked up the following day for that week.
Please place your bins at the kerb on the night before the collection day and take them back inside within 24 hours of collection.
Which way do I put the bins?
Place your bins near the kerb with the wheels nearest to the house. (A message on the lid tells you the right way). Try and make sure trees, poles or parked cars do not obstruct them. If you live in a court put your bins on a straight part of the court. Please leave a minimum of 500mm between your bins when you place them at the kerb. To prevent spillage, make sure your bins are not too full and the fly-proof lid is properly closed.
What if I move house?
Council has purchased these bins for your use. However, the bins remain Council's property at all times. Each bin has a serial number, which has been recorded against the address of your property.
Please do not take the bin with you when you move. The new resident will need to use it.
What if my bin is stolen or damaged?
If your bin is damaged or stolen please contact our Customer Service staff and they will organise for a replacement bin.
