Community Plan

The Community Plan contains a vision for the municipality by 2020. It describes the priority issues identified by the community through an extensive process of community consultation. More than 2,000 residents have contributed their ideas to the Plan. It also outlines the projects that have been developed in conjunction with the community to respond to these issues.

Projects contained in the Community Plan have a focus on:

  • Reducing graffiti
  • Improving community safety
  • Improving public transport
  • Celebrating the diversity of the community
  • Improving facilities in our parks
  • Living more sustainably
  • Improving access to broadband internet
  • Making parts of Banyule 'greener'
  • Encouraging children to be more physically active
  • Capturing our history.

An important feature of the Community Plan is that it is developed and owned by the community, and the community is responsible for its implementation.

What is a Community Plan?

A Community Plan captures the community's view of a vision, priorities and actions to enhance the physical, social and economic wellbeing of the local area.

A key aspect of community planning is that the process and output is owned by the community. The process is facilitated by Council, but many of the community priorities are likely to be in areas outside the traditional scope of local government activity.

These 'whole-of-community' priorities can then be used as input into local, state and federal government planning as well as by community organisations and peak bodies.

The Community Plan will help to define a vision for Banyule's future identity - by Council, by residents, by community groups and by local businesses to achieve that future.

Community Plan Update - December 2011

Significant progress has been made in the implementation of the Banyule Community Plan!

A number of exciting actions have taken place since the Plan was launched in December 2009. The first action plan to stem from the Community Plan contains ten key projects to be implemented over three years including:

  1. Develop a street art program within Rosanna Village Shopping Centre
  2. Improve the sense of safety at Olympic Village Shopping Centre
  3. Improve timetable connections between bus and train services
  4. Celebrate our cultural richness
  5. Establish facilities in a local park that improve access for people with a disability
  6. Assist residents to live a more sustainable lifestyle
  7. Ensure all properties in Banyule have access to broadband internet
  8. Improve the ‘greeness' of some of our streets
  9. Promote physical health in young children
  10. Record the stories and experience of Olympic Village residents.

A number of actions have been successfully achieved and are now complete. There are elements of these actions that are ongoing in nature, and there is scope and potential for the value and learning outcomes to be embraced by other community groups.
